Unfortunately, Deportivo won the battle of the first 15 minutes by scoring 4 quick goals.

Anyway, it was a rough day at the office for the boys in yellow and blue as they could not fight their way back from the opening hurricane katrina of goals. Give credit to CRU after a self-destructive start, they managed to hold Deportivo to a late penalty kick and pulled one back when Scott knocked in the rebound of Chappy’s header off his face. But in the end, trying to get back into the game after falling behind by 4 quick goals proved to be too much on this final summer league day.

All in all, it was a successful summer campaign. 6 wins and 3 losses. Ryan Willis walked away with the Golden Boot, scoring 5 goals, and was handsomely rewarded with a Fosters ‘big boy’ 24oz after the game. Thanks to everyone for coming out and playing in the blazing heat – it ain’t easy.

Time for the team to rest up, play some golf, continue to improve at practice and wait for the fall season to begin. Whatever division we end up in, D3 or D2, we need to get off to a flying start to avoid playing catchup in the spring.

Until then, cheers!

After waltzing through last week’s game with the Celtic Cowboys, Cameron Road faced a much more talented and determined opponent in WTF. The hard fought game saw CRU come from behind to tie the game in the first half, and eventually see out the winner in the last minute of play in dramatic fashion.

Heading into Sunday’s mid-day game, Cameron Road was primed for an upset. Many of the team were suffering from the previous nights festivities at Casa de Chapoton, Steve McKenna was fighting a summer cold, only 2 subs were available, Andy’s somewhat blue shorts were covered in paint, and the previous week’s demolition of the Celtic Cowboys might have had the team feeling a wee bit overconfident.

WTF proved to be one of the tougher opponents of the summer campaign. Young, fit, determined and fiesty, they took the game to a short-handed Cameron Road at the start of the first half going up by an early goal. Cameron Road tried to gain a little composure, but found themselves at 6’s and 9’s more often than not as their communication was off ever so slightly.

But fighting back from an early goal is something CRU is accustomed to, and like clockwork, they got the tying goal before the half ended as Chris Peterson headed in past the keeper from BT’s cross. Powered by his new streamlined, spiked dew, Chris was on target as his roomate’s cross was delivered with pinpoint accuracy.

Going into halftime, CRU received another boost as Luke “Saxaphone Guy” Stenis provided a vitamin C smorgasbord with a ziplock full of orange slices. Soccer Moms all around the country nodded in approval.

The second half proved to be a tight affair. Jay was called into action to make some key saves, WTF were surely screaming “WTF!!” when they missed a few easy opportunities to go ahead, the referee was calling fouls every 45 seconds, and it was looking like the first draw of the summer was imminent.

That almost changed near the final whistle when Cuyler gathered up all of his strength to make a surging run down the left touch line. With BT open at the top of the box, the big man decided to go it alone and whipped in a thunderous shot that slammed off the near post. So close to victory.

As time was running out, CRU was awarded yet another free kick deep inside enemy territory. BT stepped up to take the last-gasp shot, and everyone was scratching their heads when he gently lofted the ball over the wall to his left instead of blasting in one of his trademark shots. What they didn’t know, was that he saw Way ghosting into the back side of the box and he met the cross with the very tips of his outstretched hair, squeezing the ball past the near post and the keeper to give Cameron Road a dramatic victory. Great vision from BT and a fantastic finish from Way to complete the comeback.

Man-of-the-Match: There are several no-brainers for winning the post-game award: being the only sole to bring a full ice chest full of beer to a game, celebrating a goal with a “run through the trees” salute of the treeline, and scoring a dramatic last second winning goal against a complaining, bitter, foul-mouthed opponent. Way couldn’t fit the beer on his motorcycle, he was probably too tired to make a run for the treeline, but his last second winning goal was enough to propel him to this week’s honors.

On Sunday, Cameron Road exercised the demons of years past by dropping a dime on the Celtic Cowboys and earning a 10-1 victory. Never mind these weren’t the higher division Irishmen who had tormented Cameron Road for years in D2 – on the pitch, the uniforms and accents were the same, and these merry lads paid for the sins of their higher-skilled brothers.

Once again, Cameron Road fielded a full side 16 players strong while Celtic struggled to put an extra man on the sidelines. The game started off lively with Cameron Road attacking from the opening whistle. Steve McKenna was first to get on the score sheet as he gathered the ball on the left side of the box, rounded a few defenders and drilled a shot off the dew-covered grass into the back of the net. A sizzling start for the boys in yellow and blue after only 5 minutes. If that wasn’t good enough, Steve doubled the lead soon after that with another close-range shot. And if that wasn’t good enough, minutes later Steve turned provider when he got the ball deep on the right side of the Celtic box and rolled it to Chappy, who coolly one-timed his shot past the keeper and Cameron Road were off to the races.

Up 3-0 after 10 minutes is usually a recipe for success – but on Sunday it proved to be only the appetizer to a full course beat down.

With Celtic shell shocked and stunned, Cameron Road continued to turn up the heat and throw grenades into the box. The first one to explode was Luke, who netted from close range off a corner kick. 4-0 Cameron Road. Chris Vestre, sporting his yellow top for the first time, also had a good chance in front of goal, but the Celtic D were able to fall on the explosion to avoid more shrapnel.

Next up could have been Ciro, but his run into the box ended when he got tangled up and twisted an ankle – a lesser man would have called it a day, but Ciro took a brief break to tape it up and was seen later on hunting glory from the midfield.

Steve continued his front-line domination when Chappy stole a careless pass from a Celtic defender and flicked it into Steve’s path. Steve barreled down at goal and tried to round the keeper at the last minute, and this time his shot was turned away. Not to worry, because soon after that, Chappy was taken down inside the box after bursting through the defense and was awarded a penalty kick. The Captain stepped up to take his first PK in his fledgling footy career, and smashed it right up the gut past the keeper for a 5-0 lead.

Completing the first half route and his first hat trick for Cameron Road, Steve again scored when Scott played in a perfect ball. Not a bad shift for the CRU front line: 5 goals after 30 minutes.

The half time score was CRU 6 – Celtic 0 and it was time for some changes in the lineup. Cameron Road decided to release Jay from his ho-hum morning at the back, turn loose the defenders, and flip the script on the field to make things more interesting.

At the start of the second half, Cameron Road’s back line included Willis, McKenna, Scott, Stripey with Andy Michaelis between the pipes. Jay, Chris, Dave and Bob all took their turns up top looking to increase the lead.

Like a pack of Great Whites smelling chum in the water, the newly attacking Cameron Road players continued to chase goals and glory while Celtic tried desperately to stop the bleeding and walk away with some respect. Unfortunately for them, on this day the CRU machine wasn’t finished.

If you were on the pitch, you were shooting. Peterson, BT, Bob, Cuyler, Ciro and Scott all took pops at the crumbling Celtic defense, and midway through the half, Cameron Road employed the “double switch”, sending Steve “hat trick” McKenna into goal for a spell.

Next up on the score sheet was Cameron Road’s elder Scottsman, Billy. Scott broke free and sent in a nice cross which one-hopped on the ground into the path of Billy’s flowing locks. Billy nailed a header past the keeper for yeat another goal. 7-0 Cameron Road.

Soon after, Celtic got a boost when they scored off a corner kick. Unfortunately for them, it was off a Cameron Road corner kick and an own goal. Still, they seemed elated to have actually put one into the back of the old onion bag. 8-0 Cameron Road.

In a tender moment of mercy, Steve McKenna and Billy conspired to give Celtic a break, granting them an indirect free kick insde the box which pinballed its way into the back of the net. 8-1 Cameron Road.

With more time on the clock, Cameron Road couldn’t help but continue the route, and next up was Dave, showing the power that made him a legend “back in the day” on his first tour of duty. With his forward shift coming to a close, Dave smashed in a long range shot off the post to send CRU ever so close to their first double digit score line. 9-1 Cameron Road.

In a final act of domination, Cameron Road played the ball in through the middle of the field to Chappy who turned and slotted a ball to Willis making a run down the right side of the box. Ryan continued his goal scoring hot streak as he blasted in what is turning out to be his trademark shot from a very tight angle. Cue the fat lady singing, this one was finally over. 10-1 Cameron Road.

Man-of-the-Match: It’s hard to argue with Steve McKenna’s first half stats: 3 goals and 1 assist. That would pretty much seal the deal in any game. But to add to Steve’s first half hat trick, he played central defense and keeper in the second half. Well done Steve, Roy Hodgson would be proud.

Man-of-the-Post-Match: Cheers to Stripy for scoring with a post-game beer run.

On a mostly forgettable hot and humid Sunday afternoon, Cameron Road succumbed to the curse of the dreaded ARM jerseys and fell to Austin Athletic Club by three goals.

The cliff notes version of the game is that Cameron Road gave the ball away too many times, gifted the visitors several goals, and just couldn’t find the composure in the final third of the pitch to cause much stress in the AAC defense. You knew it wouldn’t be Cameron Road’s day when they had to switch from their beautiful new yellow tops to the white ARM alternate jerseys – which should bear total responsibility for the defeat.

There were fleeting bright moments for CRU: the return of the Kraken to the back line, Willis’ super strike from a great ball from Leif, a few shots on target by Ciro, and a tripple threat of tents on the sidelines.

Hopefully Cameron Road will get back on the winning track next week and get a brake from the sun with an 8am game versus Celtic Cowboys Lite (the older, slower, less-nasty version).

Man-of-the-Match: Continuing his hot streak, Ryan Willis nabs the award this week with our only goal and a full day of hustle. That’s 4 goals in his last 3 games for the ageless forward with the Martin Sheen hairline.

On a sweltering summer afternoon in July pushing tripple digits, Cameron Road United defeated the elder statesmen of Indios 2-1 for their second win in a row and fourth of the summer season. It was a difficult game to get a handle on as the mullet-lead defense of Indios employed a Spanish ‘keep away’ style from the opening whistle. Their back passing and constant short passes might have served to frustrate the attacking Cameron Road initially, but it was a strategy that would be tested for the full 90 minutes as Cameron Road waited for an opportunity to pounce on a mistake.

The early play saw Cameron Road on the attack, Willis and Chappy were prowling around the box hoping to latch onto an errant back pass; BT, Chris and Scott controlled the center of the pitch, and a strong back line of David, Bob, Crosley and Pat made sure no Indios player came within 40 yards of Jay. But Onion Creek can be a funny place. Against the run of play, one ill-timed back pass led to a quick goal from Indios, and under the blazing Texas sun, it was Cameron Road who were suddenly feeling the heat.

Not to worry though, as Cameron Road continued to dominate possession of the ball and looked for the tying goal. Steve McKenna was his usual self around the box, creating space for himself while using the Indios defenders as dribbling cones; BT, Chris and Scott blasted shots from midfield; Dr. Sherry looked like he was out for a leisurely stroll in the park as he probed the defense; Luke, Way, Andy and Billy paved the highway on the edge of the field, and even Stripey had a pop or two come off the post.

About midway through the half, Cameron Road finally broke through with a spear through the middle of the Indios defense as Pat pushed forward and released Ryan in the middle of the box. Ryan was able to get off his shot just before hurdling the keeper to put CRU back on level terms. Willis, feeling the power of his former self in the new yellow jerseys, continued to tap into his rich vein of form with his 3rd goal in 2 games. Word on the street is he’s 5/1 to win the summer ‘golden boot’.

As the half wore on, Cameron Road continued to dominate but couldn’t make things happen close to goal. Jay was forced to make a rare, but brilliant diving save, as the defense continued to deal with the sporadic Indios long ball attacks.

The go-ahead goal looked to be on the books as Stripey looped a ball over Grey Mullet and into the lap of Captain Chappy. The Captain channeled his inner Cassio and proceded to dribble through several defenders only to be left with the keeper in his sights. But, in a sudden altruistic moment, he instead passed the ball to Willis on his left who cooly sloted the one-timer past the goalie for what was though to be his second of the afternoon. Unfortunately, goal-line technology has not been implemented at the Onion Creek Soccer Complex and Willis was called offside by the referee… who was standing at midfield. Perhaps an opportunity squandered for the boys in yellow.

At halftime, the 16 brave souls and their spectators huddled under the shade of the tent, re-applied sunscreen, and tried to reduce the effects of the heat with frozen bandanas.

With the exception of the one timely and unfortunate attack, Indios hadn’t had much luck going forward, but they pressed hard at the start of the second half calling Crosley into duty early and often. As cool as the other side of the pillow, Steve thwarted their attacks time after time along with Bob, Pat, David and new left back Andy. At one point Bob showed off the “stinger,” pushing a ball out of bounds with his tail whip.

Jay made another diving save and Indios actually managed to hit the post, but again it was Cameron Road who took control of the game and waited patiently for the winning goal which was always coming. Billy and Scott did a nice job of keeping the play alive on the right side of midfield, digging the ball off the line and sending it upfield to Chappy on the right flank. Chappy spoted Mckenna on the other side of the pitch and sent in a long cross to the forward who was able to play it into an onrushing BT. Although not one of his typical laserbeams, BT managed to scuff a shot through the arms of the Indios keeper and sent Cameron Road back on top as the ball inched into the back of the net. A great team goal for sure, and CRU never looked back.

As the day wore on, the heat and humidity continued to rise and Cameron Road almost scored again when Scott stole the ball in midfield and caught the keeper way off his line. His long range shot came off the side netting, but the referee had again blown his offside whistle moments before under much protest from Cameron Road. There were other good momemts as Bob and Stripey managed to send in good crosses and McKenna and Willis continued to torment defenders.

The day ended with a victory for Cameron Road, although it was not as easy as many had thought it would be heading into the match. For the second week in a row they were victorious in their new uniforms, feeling the power of yellow and blue in their feet and the pull of the mighty tree line in their hearts.

Man-of-the-Match: In the heat, it wasn’t a day where individual efforts stood out so much. With Indios slowing down the play to a crawl, everyone had to work hard and wait for the scoring opportunites to come. So this week the coveted award goes to the new yellow and blue uniforms. With one exception (uh huh… Andy…) it was a glorious sea of gold, blue and white that dominated play in glorious dryfit technology and style.

How does 2 + 15 + 7 + 20 + 2 + k + 16 + 16 = 8? Strange math you might think, but those were the players responsible for the 8 goal onslaught on Sunday as Cameron Road United broke-in their new yellow and blue uniforms, while breaking the backs of the MQ9-Reapers.

In a striking show of team unity and fashion sense, all 10 brave souls who showed up to play in the blistering Texas heatwave sported their new yellow Nike tops, and (amazingly) all 10 players were decked out in blue shorts and white socks. The fashion bar has been set for those not in attendance. The overall team assessment of the new kit was a resounding thumbs up with it’s Brazilian aesthetic, lightweight fabric, and colorful modern flair. And judging by the final score, Cameron Road was feeling like team Brazil as they demolished the hapless Reapers.

To be fair, the Reapers are a poor side. To make matters worse, they fielded 9 players to Cameron Road’s 10. But they were in good spirits and ready to spend a 100 degree afternoon playing the not-so-beautiful game instead of watching it on tv.

From the opening kickoff, Cameron Road controlled the game, rarely having to come back into their half to defend. It quickly became evident that this was a Clark Field practice with big goals, and the turkey shoot mentality began to take hold.

Luke was the first one to fire off a salvo of shots on the Reapers, letting loose a few belters from distance to test the keeper’s mettle. Soon, others followed in his footsteps, with pretty much every forward player letting loose. Chap, Way, Willis, Billy, BT, and Leif all tested the sanctity of the net within the first 10 minutes.

You could tell that the arrival of the opening goal was imminent, and Ryan Willis was the first to bulge the onion bag with a close range shot. He goes down in the record books as the first player to score in the new jerseys as he kissed the new badge with a nod to the treeline on the way back up the pitch.

Up next was BT, with what is becoming his trademark shot – a laser beam from midfield. Could have been with his left foot, could have been with his right. At this point it’s academic since he’s adept with both feet.

With pretty much 90% of the possession, Cameron Road tried to work on keeping the ball and passing it around while attacking. Playing the small passes and swinging the ball around, looking for the final opening to release a player through on goal.

For the final goal of the half, Luke strolled through the center of the pitch and played in a through ball to Chappy who stood at the top of the box. The Captain gathered the ball, turned, took a few dribbles and fired off a shot to the near post to beat the keeper for the third time.

The half ended with Ciro blasting a shot at the keeper from close range as Chappy played him in on the right side of the box. The scoreline read Cameron Road 3, Reapers 0, but it could have been 7 or 8.

With the feeling that the score could potentially get out of hand quickly, Cameron Road decided to turn loose Jay into the outfield. As a match-saving keeper, he has few rivals in the league, but he’s also a standard at practice so it was nice to see him get the chance to get a run out and hopefully sniff out a goal. BT replaced him between the pipes. Another change saw Chris Peterson and his freshly shaved head swap out with Ryan Willis, as Chris attempted to test out the legitimacy of his #10 jersey choice.

The second half picked up right where the first half ended, with Cameron Road heading downhill looking for more goals. Ciro and Jay were pulling the strings in the center of the midfield, with Chappy, Way and Chris floating around further up the pitch. Luke and Way both had nice runs down the left side, Chappy got a few deep runs on the right and Jay wormed his way into the box on several occasions.

Way was up next and opened his scoring account off a beautiful free kick from Luke. As the keeper pushed away the shot, Way was in perfect position to poke it home. Way came oh-so-close to doubling his account later in the half as Willis sent in a perfect curling cross that found him unmarked at the back post. But his header attempt went wide.

After becoming the provider, Willis next turned goal-scorer as he headed in his own rebound for his second of the day, and Cameron Road’s 5th of the afternoon.

Then, in a moment of brilliance that everyone wanted to see, Jay gathered the ball at the top of the box, spun around and unleashed a great volley that landed in the top corner for CRU’s 6th goal of the game. A great reward for all the hard work he puts in saving Cameron Road’s ass on a weekly basis.

In a moment of mercy, Cameron Road allowed the Reapers to roam into their half and fire off a shot. With his Ultimate Frisbee instincts kicking in, BT dived to his left to save the shot, but the damn jabulani squirted through his grasp and the Reapers were on the board.

After the last water break, Ciro was next up to man the goal, with BT moving to the center of defense. This proved to be a vital switch because BT was able to spot the opportunity for a quick tactical change to the attacking lineup. Noticing that Chappy was spending some time rooted to the field in anticipation for a few easy through balls, BT ordered him to swap positions with Billy at right back. Knowing that his legs and lungs were useless from his week on the Mexican beach and his veins still coursed with tequilla, there were no arguments from the Captain as he accepted his role on the back line. The switch payed off in spades as Billy announced himself with authority, banging in two quick goals, one from close range, and the other a peach of a shot from distance.

The game finally ended with Cameron Road scoring 8 goals. They could have had 15 on the day, but in the end were satisfied with a fantastic short-handed, mid-day effort. A brilliant way to break in the new uniforms. Surely everyone who missed this one will be kicking themselves at the opportunity to get on the score sheet.

Next up for Cameron Road is a tough game with Deportivo, after a week’s rest for the fourth of July.

Man-of-the-Match: As the last member of the roster to break his goal scoring drought, Jay earns the honors this week with his fantastic goal.

With Captain Chapoton lounging, drink in hand, on the oil-free beaches of Mexico, Cameron Road United (CRU) took the field in what could be the last game in red and white strips. Our glorious tree line silently sweated in anticipation, as the increasingly whiny foe, Struggle FC (SFC), grew to nearly 20 strong on the sideline.

The match started off under the sweltering, day-before-summer sun with SFC and Cameron Road exchanging blows like old boxing foes in a 12-round thriller. Scott, BT and Leif moved the ball with pace and intelligence through the middle while Ciro and the usual suspects were holding it down in the back. But in true American fashion, Cameron Road conceded an early goal on a quick volley from the PK spot. The shot just cleared Jay’s fingertips and tucked under the cross bar. CRU 0-1 SFC.

The rest of the first half saw Cameron Road pushing strong up the pitch. Steve McKenna and Willis were pressuring the Struggle defense to the point of breaking down with nearly every ball sent their way. Finally, in a sloppy play from their sweeper, a ball was played back and handles illegally by Kenny Loggins, setting up an indirect kick in the box. BT drove in the equalizer with the Donovanesque composure. The score stood CRU 1-1 SFC at halftime.

The second half continued where the first half left off, strong, physical play that left some of them crying for the whistle. CRU continued to push up and send balls into the box for any one of the attacking runs o’ Roaders to finish on goal. A deep cross into the box was handballed by an SFC defender and the beautiful sound of the whistle came blazing through the air. McKenna tucked a scorcher in right side for the go ahead as Kenny Loggins again flopped around on the ground. CRU 2 -1 SFC

There were several close calls from set pieces outside the box featuring Cuyler and BT that had some sweet movement on them, while Andy had a brilliant header that made thunderous love to that near post! Towards the end of the match, Struggle were able to sneak in two unanswered goals to take the lead. FT: CRU 2-3 SFC

While an unfortunate result, it was a good showing. SFC is always a friendly crew who are good sports and great guys, as Scott truly demonstrated after the match. But their recent recruiting spree seemed to drown out the referee’s whistle with their tears.

Next we have the Reapers, who have been getting absolutely slaughtered. It may be safe to say that if we handed out beers for every goal, no one’s thirsty! Come. And. Get. It! Show up and score some frakking goals.

Man of the Match: We’ve scored some goals from set pieces recently. Hell, Cuyler may be up for an ESPY! This week it was BT with a perfectly placed, driving finish to start our scoring efforts.

Just like the old days when Andy Magilow was calling the shots, when Billy was just a wee young lad in his 30’s, when Willis was engaged (wait, isn’t he still engaged?), when Chappy had hair (ok, only a little bit, but still), Cameron Road beat up on longtime nemesis Babaganoutch en route to a 3-1 victory.

Having demolished their first week opponent by 6 goals, Babaganoutch probably thought they would again cruise to an easy win against their old foes, but from the opening whistle, Cameron Road was on the march, looking to pick up where they left off last weekend.

With 7 subs on the sidelines, and special guest Big John back on the pitch for an encore, Cameron Road had all their firepower at the ready and were able to keep fresh legs on the field for most of the game.

After some back and forth stuff with both teams trying to get into a flow, it was Cameron Road who struck first with a world class finish. With a so-so England performance on his mind, Steve McKenna picked up the ball in enemy territory and showed the English midfielders how to perform a bit of magic himself when he flicked a back heal pass to an onrushing BT. Brian scooped up the ball on the edge of the box and unleashed an unstoppable Tsabalala South African special with his left foot that left the keeper staring at the vapor trail in the sky. The celebration on the pitch was drowned out by the earth shattering sound of thousands of vuvuzelas buzzing in unison… in BT’s mind.

As the half wore on, the old rivalry showed it’s teeth as the new batch of Baba-goons asserted their cranky attitudes on the pitch, constantly fouling, yet complaining to the ref when the fouls were returned.

The first half eventually boiled over as midfield marauder Merrit was elbowed in the face and then hog-tied on the ground by a ‘Noutchette. The ensuing scuffle had to be broken up by both teams, with Cuyler and Big John stepping in to pull apart the fracus. As tempers continued to flair around them, an unlikely UFC fight developed as Way Shong squared off with the opponent’s Teletubby mascot. Unfortunately for both, the teenage referee had lost control of the situation, and issued both parties the dreaded summer red card, earning them both early afternoons on the sidelines and (unfortunately), an early vacation for the rest of the summer season.

With both teams having been reduced to 10 men, there was a little more room to operate and Cameron Road had several chances to double up the lead with Steve just missing goal on a few back-to-back tries. Ciro also burst into the box and tried to set up Stripey for his opening CRU goal, but his pass just missed the bearded-Bosnian hitman.

The half ended 1-0, and both teams regrouped at halftime, preparing for battle with one less player each.

For the first ten minutes, Baba had Cameron Road on the back foot. They were finding lots of space in the midfield, and exploiting it with several shots on goal. Of course Jay made his typical saves, already proving to be more trustworthy between the pipes than the England goalkeeper.

After absorbing the Baba initial onslaught, Cameron Road found itself on the break and Andy Michaelis popped up in the box and sent the ball to the far corner, beating the keeper and doubling CRU’s lead. It was an unusually sublime finish with a daft touch from Andy, who usually prefers the more direct jackhammer approach to shooting.

At 2-0, Cameron Road started to gain more control of the match, but Baba were able to pull one back with a bit of a scrappy goal. Luckily, the goal-scorers douchy sportsmanship came back to haunt him in the end, as he pulled out his six guns to celebrate the goal while taunting the Cameron Road sidelines on the way back to the center circle. He might want to save his victory celebration for the end of the match next time… if they even have something to celebrate.

For the last 15 minutes, Baba continued to press for the tying goal, but the CRU’s defense sucked up the pressure and turned them back. Cuyler’s physical aura alone stopped several attacks, as his fiery hatred for one of his old foes returned.

To close out the game and put it out of reach for Baba, Cameron Road again struck on the break with Ciro feeding the ball to BT. BT’s run put him on the right side of the box where Chappy had made his way to the top of the 18, unmarked. BT rolled it to the Captain, who had time to gather the ball, make a sandwich, check his email and eventually let loose a sizzling toe-poked shot into the back of the net. It didn’t hurt that Stripey had been taken down inside the box in front of him, distracting the keeper and providingsome cover for the shot.

Cameron Road rode out the last 5 minutes and closed out another victory. Their fourth in five.

Man-of-the-Match: Tough one here. Was it BT, with his brilliant goal and assist? Was it Way, who sacrificed his body for the team? Was it Scott, who again was everywhere on the pitch? Was it Andy, who scored a goal as a midfielder, and also filled in on defense? All good choices, but when a player travels all the way from the east coast to return to the pitch, you gotta show him some love. Good work Big John, it was great to see you again!

With a hazy, hot film blanketing the sky, Cameron Road United took the field early Sunday morning and started their annual summer campaign off in style with a 1-0 victory over Fade to Black. Even at 8 a.m. the humidity was high, but Cameron Road used their recent good form to cut through the stifling heat and through the heart of the Fade to Black defense.

The subs were plenty, the scoring chances came early and often, and the defense managed to keep the shots to a minimum all day long. Even though the scoreline wasn’t very flattering, Cameron Road bossed the game and cranked out attempts on goal throughout the match.

Andy and Chap had early headers that just missed. Steve McKenna could have scored a hat trick. BT sizzled a left footer wide. Peterson had a few pops, etc. etc.

The goal came when Cameron Road “released the Kracken”, who curled in a beautiful left-footed free kick into the top corner from about 40 yards out.

Jay wasn’t troubled too much in goal, only having to make a few saves from the dangerous moves of Fade to Black’s thick-legged forward.

Having been recently promoted from the practice squad to the first team, Stripey had a few nice passes that just missed their mark while trying to get used to the big pitch from Clark Field. Maybe turning a shred of his talismanic green and white polo into a headband next week will help calm his nerves.

All in all it was a good performance and a good turnout to start the summer season. It’s gonna get mighty hot in the weeks to come, so it’s nice to have some points in the bag early on.

Man-of-the-Match: With a David Beckhamesque free kick, the Kracken started right back up where he left off last year: playing intimidating defense and scoring brilliant goals. Now go back to your silent slumber underneath the sea until we call on you again.
